……… **Hathaway is known to have made pictures in Down East Maine as far as Eastport and as far south as Newburyport, Massachusetts. The subject matter includes lighthouses and various types of boats: fishing, coastwise, tugs, private yachts, and boat portraits. Many of the small souvenir pictures were sketches but had precise delicate detail paid to the primary subject. Paint is thinly applied. Masts, sails, and rigging are executed with the faithful detail of a draughtsman. Water and sky are often secondary, yet are presented with warmth and feeling when the subject demands them.  …….. Hathaway's vast output of charming Casco Bay images may have not only promoted Portland tourism, but also provided more pleasure to more visitors than any other Maine painter of his time. ………
